The Vice Secretary of the Supreme Consultative Council of Cocobod, who doubles as the Chairman
of the Cocoa Marketing Company(Gh) Limited Union,brother Emmanuel kwaku Acquah has attended the 2014 ILO conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.Delivering the opening remarks at the world of
work summit on the theme, "Developing With Jobs, Guy Ryder, Director General of the ILO intimated
the urgent need for labour market institutions to be strengthened as these institutions provide
essential ingredients for economic growth for quality jobs and human development.
Henoted that, time and again, conventional approach to development do not produce jobs in the
quantity and quality needed, using the rise in unemployment among educated young people in
developing countries as bearing testimony to the failure of strategies that lay emphasis on
growth with job quality.The Director General said " the lack of decent job has been a central
determinant of the increase in migration,leading to the situation in which over 230 million
people are living in the countries other than the ones in which they were born".
Again,he emphasized that countries that have invested heavily in quality jobs have done better
than others from both an economic and social point of view.Toboost decent jobs that can help
to achieve developmenthe prescribed the need to design social security systems to enhance
individual capabilities to obtain jobs." There is strong evidence that social protection
helps to reduce the incidence of poverty, inequalities and vulnerable employment."The
president further opined that development needs to be underpinned by an enabling environment
for enterprises including supportive macroeconomic policies, explaining that enterprises create
jobs and their actions play key roles in determining whether the jobs are decent or not.
Hecalled on participants at the conference to work harderin the years ahead to ensure that there
is balanced income growth in order to avoid destabilizing inequalities.He added that "there is
the need to make a difference to development dynamics and prospects."By making jobs and social
protection a key goal of the post - 2015 development agenda, the world economy would have much
greater potential to make progress towards the objective of shared prosperity and inclusive growth."
Brother Emmanuel Acquah and the Cocobod delegation to the conference in an interview noted that,
the conference has been an educative one which will help empolyers and labour to strategise with
the view of living in harmony to create more industrial peace in cocobod.
